RIP Ray Manzarek

20 05 2013

Ray Manzarek died at age 74 of bile duct cancer. If Jim Morrison was the soul of the Doors, he was its heart. He was a great keyboardist and artist.

The so-called “backbone of The Band” has lost his battle with throat cancer. He was a great talent and lived an extraordinary life.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since…

30 11 2011

George Harrison passed away.  Yesterday was the anniversary of his death, but I got distracted by other things.  In any event, I really can’t believe a decade has come and gone without George

It’s nice to think that he was surrounded by friends and loved ones in his last months.  Unlike his former bandmate, John Lennon, he had a chance to iron out all his differences with Paul McCartney (and any he might’ve had with Ringo, as well.)  Before leaving us, he apparently embraced “traditional Christianity” (though he passed during a Hindu ritual of some sort) and left us with a really dang good album, Brainwashed.  He was truly a great talent and a highly entertaining, funny cat.   He was always searching for God and I hope, George found Him.

Here’s one of his best solo songs.  Luckily, we were able to hear it.

“Lucy in the Sky” has passed away

28 09 2009

Lucy Vodden, who inspired the Beatles classic “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” has passed away.  Most Beatles fans — and even many casual followers — will recall the story that while the Beatles were writing songs for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Julian Lennon came home from school with a drawing of his classmate, Lucy.  He showed his father and explained that the drawing was “Lucy in the sky with diamonds.”

To this day, people refuse to believe that the song was about anything other than LSD, a surprising notion to cling to given that the John and his fellow Beatles were quite honest about the drug references that did find their way into songs and that they had experimented quite extensively with various substances.

Nevertheless, the young lady who inspired the song has sadly passed after a long battle with cancer.  Godspeed to her family and friends.
