Liam in the celluloid biz

25 05 2011

Liam Gallagher has put together a script for a movie he wants to make about the Beatles’ Apple years, based on the Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider’s Diary Of The Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire And Its Wild Rise And Fall.  Mr. Gallagher hopes to take Johnny Depp into tackling the role of Derek Taylor, the Beatles’ famed publicist and Apple mouthpiece.

I’d love to see this movie, if it ever sees the light of day.  I get the feeling, though, it won’t ever get made.  Even if it does, will it have the marketability to appeal to a big budget guy like Depp?  I know the Gallaghers know Johnny, but I’m not sure whether Liam’s owed any favors by him.

Happy Birthday Pete Townshend

I dedicate to you what might be the best song you ever wrote and performed.

Pet Sounds. Today. 1966.

16 05 2011

On this day in 1966, Pet Sounds was released.  It’s not, by any stretch, a true “rock and roll” album.  But where else would you put it?  In what we might otherwise call “popular music,” you’d have to rank this one of the best albums ever.   “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times” is a personal favorite.

Gates come down at Strawberry Field

10 05 2011

The original gates to Strawberry Field, the Salvation Army home which inspired the Beatles’ 1967 song, have been taken down and put into storage.  They’re being replaced with replicas.

I’m enjoying Gorillaz new album, The Fall.  This song, “Detroit,” is about my hometown.  It reminds me of a cast off from McCartney II.  There’s not much too it, but I like it.
