Fleet Foxes take a bite out of Smile

14 01 2009

A fellow blogger posted about Fleet Foxes and their song White Winter Hymnal.  When I played the song (from his blog) it occurred to me that song was more or less lifted right off the Beach Boys’ unreleased Smile or the released Smiley SmileSmile might be the greatest album never (completely) made..  There is some amazing work on it.  Too bad Brian Wilson had a breakdown after Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was released and didn’t have the heart to finish it.  But I digress…

Fleet Foxes understood how amazing the Beach Boys were in that period and borrowed from them.  Here’s White Winter Hymnal.

Compare that to these two Beach Boys songs, “With Me Tonight” from Smiley Smile and “Do You Like Worms” from Smile.

Oasis has been blasted for years for “ripping off” the Beatles.  The Fleet Foxes, though, are media and critic darlings right now.  No one will say a negative word about them stealing from the Beach Boys.

Mind you, I’m not criticizing Fleet Foxes.  If you’re going to steal, steal from the best.  If you can get away with it, even better.
