2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees announced

23 09 2009

The artists nominated for the next R & R Hall of Fame include

  • Kiss
  • LL Cool J
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Donna Summer
  • Darlene Love (who?)
  • ABBA
  • The Chantels (who?)
  • The Stooges

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090923/ap_en_mu/us_music_rock_hall

I’ve said this here before and I’ll say it again.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame does an awful job of inducting worthy rock and rollers.  How could LL Cool J or Donna Summer possibly make the Hall of Fame before massively influential groups like The Small Faces/The Faces and T. Rex?  I just don’t get it.

Rush still isn’t there, and they’ve been around since 1974. Go figure.

must be getting paid off–you people stink—no Moodies–no Chicago–
you suck—i hope this goes direct to you—of course, cleveland always did
suck….

Dominic

So why does Cleveland suck? they don’t do the nominating, it all done out of NYC

26 09 2009
ourboy

Yeah, good question. The RRHOF Nominating Committee and the Hall itself (the building) are separate entities. Jann Wenner runs the RRHOF committee. The folks in Cleveland have no say in who ends up in the Hall itself.

Finally….FINALLY – Darlene Love, the BEST female voice of the 60’s. Now that Phil Spector’s in jail, she can get the award she so richly deserves.

23 09 2009

where is CHICAGO?!?

23 09 2009
D Minjarez

What about The B-52’s? This great band has been touring almost nonstop for over 30 years. Except for one deceased member (Ricky) it’s the original members and they are a great live band. Last year they released their latest CD “Funplex.” Again, what about The B-52’s?

23 09 2009

what happened to kid rock he’s been around for25 yrs

23 09 2009

Who the hell is Faces and the dinosaur guy?

23 09 2009

Best do your homework about Darlene Love! However, I agree that T-Rex and Bolan s/b in -a long time ago! Kiss? Abba? Summer? It ain’t what we call Rock n Roll!!

What kind of R n’ R expert has never heard of The Chantels?

Who claimed to be an “expert”?

Still no Monkees? This is a major travesty!!!!!

The Hall of Shame is the biggest farse. There are several worthy groups that AREN’T rap and hip-hop and others, that ARE actual rock bands. You know when the voting is led by the scumbag owner of Rolling Stone, it’s bound to be ridiculous.

23 09 2009
Ellen

R&R Hall of Fame regularly ignores truly deserving groups. Here are two groups that DEFINITELY belong at the top of the list:

THE CHURCH

THE MOODY BLUES

’nuff said…

23 09 2009
RYAN

THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS AND THE STOOGES SHOULD BE THE ONLY ONES ON THIS LIST, THE ETHIER ARE NOT EVEN ROCK OR THEY JUST SUCK.

I don’t know who votes for the inductee’s, but someone needs thier head examined. First of all, the Rock-N-Roll hall of fame should be in DETROIT. Second, Ted Nugent should have been in prior to half the people in there now. Someone else needs thier head examined. What the hell does Donna Summer or L.L. Cool J or ABBA have to do with Rock-N- Roll. Another person needs thier head examined… The next person will probably be Nancy Pelosi…

23 09 2009
Randy Ford

How are LL Cool J,Donna Summer,or ABBA considered ROCK. Give me a break, the King of rock (Buddy Holly) not that other guy is rolling over in his grave. Rock n Roll should be just that Rock n Roll. Give us guitar’s blazing rock, not rap or bubble gum crap.

23 09 2009
Velda

I have patiently waited year after year for Hall and Oates to get nominated. I can’t believe that the greatest duo of all time aren’t even considered. I guess the fact that were the biggest selling duo of all time has nothing to do with it. Numerous of their songs are sampled. I am so disappointed because I am from Cleveland and I know it has better intelligence.

23 09 2009
Likeable-Larry

The Chantels–a 1 hit wonder. Darlene Love, a Christmas one hit wonder. The Stooges–an Iggy Pop wonder. And as far the comment about Small Faces, The Faces and T. Rex being influential—about the only thing they ever influenced me to do was change the station!! (Bang A Gong–you got to kidding)

23 09 2009
John

And you’re intimating that LL Cool J and Donna Summer influenced Rock ‘n Roll???? I don’t have anything against them, they’re talented…but Rock ‘n Roll, be real!!!

29 11 2009
Geoff

The Faces and the Small Faces were not the same group. And if you cannot appreciate the brilliance of the Small Faces, I feel very sorry for you.

23 09 2009
MikeH

The fools within the R & R Hall of Fame are too stupid to realize that their choices fail to add legitimacy and credibility to the Hall itself. Their choices are nothing but a pathetic excuse for someone elses favorites versus groups that have influenced and expanded rock and roll.

When groups such as The Moody Blues and Chicago are snubbed for the likes of so many of their niche choices that they have made there is something wrong. LL Cool J? The Chantels? Give me a break! They wouldn’t know rock history if it bit them in the ass.

23 09 2009
Leigh Johnson

If the likes of ABBA and Donna Summers (nothing against either) make the RRHF then what up with Neil Diamond please-really…..

23 09 2009
C. Drews

Donna Summer, LL Cool J??? Why not some groups who are a whole lot more rock oriented, Grand Funk Railroad, Chicago Transit Authority (Chicago).

23 09 2009
K Feiling

when will the GoGos be inducted? I believe they deserve it. I think they were a heck of alot more influential than Donna Summer!

23 09 2009
Frank Page

This is bull!! how can L.L. Cool J and Donna Summer be nominated for the R&R Hall of Fame? What have these two individuals contributed to Rock N Roll? R&R music NEVER! dies or fades out; in the other hand Cool J’s music (if you want to call it music) died out in the late 90’s and isnt disco dead? AND yeah! what happened to T. Rex? L.L. Cool J and Donna Summer instead of T. Rex? Who is in charge of the R&R? Al Sharpton?

23 09 2009
shelly warble

WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? REALLY ????? ARE YOU FORGETTING ABOUT THE ARTIST THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR OVER 25 YEARS ?? BON JOVI !!!!!

23 09 2009
mike

The progressive rock band Yes is not in the hall of fame, but LL Cool J and Donna Summer might be. Need I say more? The hall of fame is a joke.

23 09 2009
bruce barch

LL cool j, donna summer, abba…none of the crap they did is Rock ‘n’ Roll. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame should be Rock ‘n’ Roll, and the roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Get the other crap out.

23 09 2009
Linda

The Stooges?!?! How about Boz Scaggs and the Steve Miller Band?

23 09 2009
ourboy

I completely understand the Stooges. Their influence on actual styles/varieties of rock and roll is almost too deep to talk about sensibly. They were probably the truest “godfathers of Punk” and lots of post-punk rockers and grunge types were massively influenced by the Stooges. They should’ve gone into the RRHOF 10 years ago.

23 09 2009
Christopher Morales

Amazing yet unsurprising. A rock and roll hall of fame with the likes of Donna summer as a nominee when the METAL GODS!! Judas Priest or Motorhead or a number of classic ROCK/METAL Legends aren’t even inducted.

23 09 2009
Curtis

This is again a joke, ll cool, and donna summer while both respected artists are not rockers. The list of those not in the hall is amazing. HEART , PAT BENATAR, RUSH, BAD COMPANY ETC ETC. If you want musical diversitie fine but do not call yourself the rock and roll hall of fame.

23 09 2009
Michael Stone

LL Cool J inducted before Rush?? What a sham!!!!!!!

23 09 2009

What happened to Alice Cooper, I guess they forgot again………………………………………………………………….

23 09 2009

LL Cool J?!?!?! I don’t care how old he is in the rap game, that guy sucks!!!! The only thing worse than his music is his acting.

23 09 2009

Hello? What about Rush? Do they not qualify because they’re Canadian or something? WTF?

23 09 2009

It’s so obvious — ABBA is the most deserving to go into the Hall of Fame!!!

23 09 2009

How can the R&R hall of fame omit people like Neil Diamond, Chicago and the Moody Blues? I just don’t get it.

23 09 2009
ourboy

If Neil Diamond didn’t go in as a performer, he could go in as a non-performer for his songwriting.

23 09 2009
Tom C

I refuse to visti the Hall of Fame unitl RUSH gets in. They have consistantly put our great records and have a huge loyal following to their concerts. RUSH deserve to get it. I can’t understand why it is taking so long.
My I also suggest Cheap Trick and Jethro Tull.

Best regards,

Tom

23 09 2009
david harry

What ashame it is that a powerhouse like RUSH hasn’t made it in the hall yet. After recently celebrating 30 years, the albums, the DVD’s, the career, not to mention the same line up for all this time. Yes i am a HUGE fan and have been since ( big brother ) turned me on to 2112. I was sure hoping to make a trip to the hall of fame this year. Looks like I’ll have to wait again.

23 09 2009

Sorry about the poor spelling in my previous email. I was being Rushed.

How can this so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have any credibility what so ever when some one like Alice Cooper is not in it. I mean really, Madonna is in for crying in the mud!

23 09 2009
Joe Racz

They are just getting around to getting KISS on the Ballot? Are you kidding? How about Alice Cooper and RUSH too? LL Cool J ? Are you joking? How about we get some people with a clue working at the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame? Not some self- proclaimed musicologist who don’t know squat about Rock-N-Roll!!!!!
Miles Davis???????? Are you kidding?????? Let’s have a rule for the RNRHOF that anyone who has a Master’s degree can’t be on the board… At least the spirit of Rock would have some chance… What an embarrassment…

23 09 2009
Dane Spencer

Again a big joke what about Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne, Iron Butterfly, The Faces,
etc etc etc.

23 09 2009
Buddy

Again, the classic Moody Blues left out. My God people…….they deserve it for their introduction of symphony to rock music. Good grief.. Nights in White Satin is one of the biggest hits of all times and frequently is listed in the top ten classic rock songs of all times on radio station polls.
Wake up HOF. I have visited your place but never again until the Moodies have their rightful place.

23 09 2009
Richard Nygard

What about ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) ? They have had bigger success in the US than Abba in both singlese and albums and yet are cruelly ignored !

23 09 2009
LYNN

Hope ABBA and the Chantels win!!!!

23 09 2009
donald lee micco

(who ?) Chantels were a late 50’s early 60’s do- whop group.

23 09 2009
alpha_omega_1970

I would have to agree! Half the list doesnt belong, and I would have to add the Peppers to the list of doesnt belong. Not that I dont think they are a great band, because I do. I think they deserve to be in one day, but if bands like KISS, ABBA, and the Stooges are not in yet then the peppers would have to wait.

23 09 2009
Michael Paradis

Talk about LAME. The Rock & Roll HOF is a JOKE…..

What about Chicago (the band). They rank 13th overall on WORLDWIDE record sales. They have been active since like 1969. Their first 5 albums are masterpieces. The members, each are some of the finest musicians on the planet.
ie; Their late guitarist Terry Kath, who Jimi Hendrix said “played rings around him” and was one of the most innovative guitarists around, Danny Seraphine
thier drummer also, paved the way and influenced so many drummers of our time, not to mention Robert Lamm and Peter Cetera’s songwriting abilities and indentifiable vocal styles are more than worthy for induction and for far to long have been snubbed by this bogus institution. Even Paul Shaffer who I believe plays at every hall induction ceremony has played on Chicago records and agrees that they belong there. Yet you have the Stooges?, L.L. Cool J?? and more, who weren’t even ALIVE when these guy’s were at their peak.
Who’s ASS DIDN’T THEY KISS???

23 09 2009
Mike

I’m sorry, but year after year I see a very influential band like Rush get overlooked and bands that in my opinion, made little impact get put in this thing. Why is it called the Rock and Roll Hall of fame if we’re trying to kiss up to hip hop and disco. Let them get thier own hall. Country has thier own. I’m continually disappointed in this organization.

23 09 2009
Mike

I agree with the comment about LL Cool J and Donna Summer but how could you not know who Darlene Love is and why she belongs in the Hall. She is the great voice on many of the Phil Spector hits of the 60s.

23 09 2009
Jake

I’ve got a problem with a couple of these nominees for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame . . . it has that title for a reason . . . Donna Summer is a disco/R&B singer, not a rocker – her music was what I was trying to avoid back in the ’70’s. There is no doubt that she is worthy of being in a Hall of Fame – she’ a terrific singer . . . but not the ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ Hall of Fame . . . LL gets in just on the cool factor . . . all the others – WELCOME!!!!

23 09 2009
Dwayne Roby

Where the hell is Boston? Why haven’t they been inducted yet? LL Cool J you gotta be kidding!!!! Who’s running that place? Bozo the Clown?

23 09 2009
cromnine

Kiss should have ben in there 10 years ago.

23 09 2009
Christine

What about Green Day?

23 09 2009
Phil Snave

What about the Moody Blues? I guess making good music for forty years is not enough to get into the hall. I’m sure LL & Donna are more musically talented. My ass.

23 09 2009
mike mosblech

I would like to know what LL COOL J or Donna Summer have contributed to rock and roll that they would even be considered for nomination? While both have made great contributions to music i wouldn’t consider their style to be anywhere near rock and roll. ABBA is marginal at best. There are many venues to recognize great contributions to music. Why is it that artists outside the genre are even being though of for induction. Have we already run out of rock and roll artist that deserve recognition? I think not!

23 09 2009
ourboy

That’s the big question: why are non-rockers in the RRHOF? I just went through the place in June and it’s full of all sorts of country, R&B, blues, jazz and even some hip-hop stuff. The RRHOF pretty much lumps all pop music together, why I’m not sure. Maybe because “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” sounds cooler than the “Popular Music Hall of Fame.”

23 09 2009
Steve

How could LL make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when he doesn’t rock? Come on now! He has good music, but where are the bands like Krokus?

23 09 2009
mercurygirl

ok, why Abba, Donna Summer and LL Cool J…. Really!

23 09 2009
Dwayne Roby

Donna Summer as an inductee why don’t you put Micheal Jackson or that rapper kid Emmcie (however you spell it). Or maybe MC Hammer. Do you people really Know what Rock n Roll really is? Hell Faith Hill is more Rock n Roll than half the people you clowns have inducted. ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME MY ASS!!!!!!!

23 09 2009
Don Mantlo

Can anyone explain why, in the bluest of all blue hells, Chicago is not in the Hall of Fame?

23 09 2009
Lori

I agree, and there is also Bon Jovi. They have been around for what 25 years now.

23 09 2009
freddy

Perhaps someone else should pick.

23 09 2009
rg honeywell

How about 38 special, cheap trick, deep purple???

23 09 2009
ourboy

I don’t think 38 Special will ever make it. Deep Purple will. If LL Cool J can get in, Cheap Trick should, too. But the RRHOF voters don’t necessarily think that way.

23 09 2009
Dave White

What about Danny and the Juniors?
They recorded “At the Hop” and told the world that
“Rock and Roll is Here to Stay.”

23 09 2009
ourboy

Why not? The RRHOF is full of one and two hit wonders.

23 09 2009
Victoria Shapiro

What a let down. Do groups have to lobby to get inducted? What is your criteria? I’ve been disappointed for several years to not see DEEP PURPLE inducted as they are definitely Rock & Roll.

23 09 2009
Brad Crezee

Darlene Who, Chantels Who as the article says…

JOURNEY, JOURNEY, JOURNEY, JOURNEY, JOURNEY, JOURNEY, JOURNEY,

Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx, Styx,

Boston, Boston, Boston, Boston, Boston, Boston, Boston, Boston, Boston,

There is a list a mile long of bands that are far more deserving than some of the inductees they have now, and some slated for 2010. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the Rock and Roll Hall of Lame – what a joke; they induct bands like Grandmaster Flash before legendary bands like Journey, Styx, Boston, Foreigner, Kansas, Lynard Skynard, and the list goes on and on and on, but they induct Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, and many others that have contributed far less to Rock and Roll than any of these bands; I wouldn’t spend a plug nickel to go there to see Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, LaVern Baker, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Etta James and many other unknowns.

17 01 2010
slim

Wait, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, and Etta James are unknowns? Wow.

18 01 2010
ourboy

Yeah, that’s a rather odd list of “unknowns.” Perhaps Brad was being ironic. 🙂

23 09 2009
Randy

It’s a freakin travesty. And how about Laura Nyro? Don’t know who she is? Google her….

23 09 2009
Randy

Abba? LL Cool J? I think I’m gonna puke

23 09 2009
Chris Kennedy

The Chantels had that hit “Maybe” in the late 50s and Darlene Love was integral to the “girl group” scene in the early 60s. They made a contribution to the rock and roll canon. But it seems to me that maybe the Hall of Fame is running out of nominees. The Stooges? Abba? Donna Summer? Red Hot Chile Peppers? I guess I “don’t get it.” If almost any music is included, then the label “rock and roll” doesn’t mean anything specific. Maybe they need to change their name to Pop Music Hall of Fame. Then Abba would make sense, as would Bing Crosby, Englebert, Perry Como, and Patti Page. I can imagine the decision-makers there around a big table perhaps saying something like, “look, we have to come up with some inductees and we’ve already covered just about everybody who created rock and roll. What are we going to do? It wouldn’t go over well to come out and say that everybody who truly deserves mention has already been included during the past couple decades of doing this.” It might be time to induct one person occasionally rather than a list every year.

23 09 2009
ourboy

I’d have to re-read the article to see of the Chantels and Darlene Love are being nominated as performers or some other category. The RRHOF has at least 4 categories that I can see: performers, non-performers, early influences and sidemen. Sidemen include deserving folks like James Jamerson. My thought is that maybe Darlene Love would fit better in the “sidemen” category than in the performers category.

23 09 2009
Bryan

If you don’t know who Darlene Love is you should probably not be too critical on the HOF’s choices for musicians. Sure, she may not be a household name like the RHCP, but she’s certainly an influential singer.

And the reason they’re choosing bands like the Chili Peppers before T. Rex is because more people know and care about the Chili Peppers. They’ve made a greater impact on popular music than T. Rex ever did. Not to say that Rex wasn’t influential, but they didn’t make the same impact.

Now, why Darlene Love and the Chantels before T. Rex? Because they were from an earlier generation. Give it time. If they’re deserving, they’ll get in eventually…

23 09 2009
ourboy

Nice thoughts, Bryan.

I guess though I’m still puzzled. If the RRHOF is trying to put earlier influences in before later ones, The Dave Clark Five should’ve gotten in before Prince or U2. And why is Rod Stewart HOF worthy but not the band that did the most to build his solo career? He built quite a name for himself with the Jeff Beck group, but the Faces launched him? So why not the Faces in before Rod? Just some thoughts.

23 09 2009
C. Rivard

KISS belongs in the Hall of Fame!!! With all due respect to Alice Cooper,he may of started with the face paint and theatrics, but he was not quite the magnitude and realness of the theatrics of KISS.
L.L.Cool J belongs in a hall of fame, but DOES NOT belong in the ROCK-N-ROLL Hall of Fame. The same goes for Donna Summer.Rock-n-roll is a pretty broad term, but come on,this is pushing it!

P.S. MOTLEY CRUE, 2011 HALL OF FAME?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

23 09 2009
B. Creech

What about nominating the “Moody Blues” better than most of the 2010 nominees.

23 09 2009
ourboy

Too many comments to respond to each one, so I’ll hit a few themes that recurred quite a bit.

1. Seems like there is a lot of love for the Moody Blues, Chicago, and Rush. I’m not personally a fan of any of those three bands but I don’t understand why they’re not in the HOF either.

2. A lot of you seem to agree that Donna Summer and LL Cool J simply don’t belong in the HOF. I’m not against either of them being in the HOF. A long time ago, the hall decided “rock and roll” includes hip-hop and other pop genres. That’s not the call I’d make, but it is what it is. My gripe is that non-rock groups are making it into the HOF while massively successful and influential bands (take Rush, for instance) are waiting to be nominated. I just don’t get how that happens.

3. As for Darlene Love and The Chantels, I said “who?” next to their names to suggest that, in my opinion, they don’t even merit reference. You’re free to disagree.

Thanks for all the comments, by the way.

23 09 2009
Mike S.

If you don’t know Darlene Love or the Chantels, you really do NOT know your history of rock and roll.

23 09 2009
HOF stinks !

Let’s see; STILL no Johnny Rivers, Neil Diamond, Chicago, Moody Blues, Guess Who, Link Wray….I hate even typing about this

This is the queer Jann Wenner’s idea of Rock n Roll and all those record execs who absolutely have no clue. When will someone tell us who picks these a$$wipes every year ??

Bull****

23 09 2009
lkel62

Come on now! What about Journey & especially Steve Perry! It’s been far too long a wait for them. They’re GREAT ya know. GREAT!

23 09 2009
spyder3010

YES! Moody Blues, without question. Deep Purple. Alice Cooper. Paul Revere and the Raiders (even had their own national TV show!!). Rush. Guess Who. Doobie Brothers as well as Chicago. Four Dog Night. The Kinks. The Fixx. Essentially, what the Rock and Roll generations grew up with . . .

The EMP in Seattle has a tighter display of good R&R history than the HOF.

23 09 2009
Stan

If a band’s worthiness for induction is based in part on the influence it has had on other artists, I’d nominate the Pixies.

I notice that neither the Smiths nor Morrissey have made it into the Hall. That’s a pretty stupid oversight on somebody’s part.

In the category of “non-performers”, I’d nominate John Peel. (If any of you don’t know who John Peel is, you have no business claiming to know anything about rock music, period.)

23 09 2009
ourboy

A lot of Americans would be unfamiliar with John Peel simply because there’s not a lot of talk over here about the history of Radio London or the BBC. I could see how someone would miss him.

23 09 2009
Charlie J.

Dick Dale should have been one of the first ones in when the Hall started. He was the inspiration for Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix idolized DD. BTW, is JH in the Hall? I seem to remember, though, that someone important in the Hall doesn’t like DD, but that shouldn’t matter. He is one of, if not THE originator of the smokin’ hot R&R electric guitar.

23 09 2009
Diamond

Re: The Chantels–listen to “Maybe”, “Look in my eyes”.This group was one the first girl groups in rock n roll. They are fantastic and deserve to be inducted.

23 09 2009
ourboy

Thanks Diamond. This truly seems a matter of taste. Personally, I don’t like most of the early girl groups and don’t think being one of the first of that kind is noteworthy in and of itself. New Kids on the Block, New Edition, Bell Biv Devoe and Boys II Men — and there were others well before them — paved the way for the boy bands of the late 90’s, but I don’t think that makes any of them HOF worthy.

But if you want the Chantels to be in because you feel they were great at what they did, cheers. I wouldn’t ever argue taste. Thanks for the comment.

23 09 2009
Jean

LLCoolJ??? How long has HE been around in the business, anyway??? I can’t believe Neil Sedaka and Neil Diamond are STILL overlooked after each has been in the business for 50(+) years and their music is still relevant today?? AND…they are STILL performing-selling out venues. Last week someone passed away who was with a group who had, I think, no more than two hits—-that group (forget the name) is in the RnRHofF!!!!!!! Who the heck nominates the nominees?????? The Chantels? How many hits did THEY have?? A couple???? There has to be some very strange reason why the two Neils keep getting looked over every year. Why?? Wish someone involved with the nominations would finally come out and give the reason why.

Donna Summer
* FIRST female singer to have a #1 album and #1 single on the Billboard charts simultaneously – a feat she accomplished againjust a few months later, breaking her own record.
* FIRST artist to have three #1 double albums on the Billboard charts consecutively with Live and More, Bad Girls, and On the Radio. (she still remains the only female artist and solo act with this accomplishment).
* FIRST female solo artist with three #1 hits in a one year period, topping the charts with the singles “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls” and “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” – a duet with Barbara Streisand.
* FIRST artist to achieve Gold status with a 12 inch for her single “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough).”
* FIRST artist ever to be given a Grammy for the category “Best Rock Female Vocal Performance” for her Platinum single “Hot Stuff.”
* FIRST artist ever to be given a Grammy for the category “Best Dance Recording” for her song “Carry On.”
* FIRST group of artists to be inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame in 2004, alongside The Bee Gees and Barry White.

23 09 2009

The Chantels were great…guess you have to have been born prior to the 50’s to remember them.

24 09 2009
RexTammyPrincess

What about Mink Deville’s lead singer Willy Deville? Friend and contemporary of greats like The Ramone’s, Blondie, Patty Smith, New York Dolls back in the days of the CBGB’s?

Has this nomination committee completely forgotten Pat Benatar? The first Female Rock Solo Artist? Prior to Pat Benatar, female singers had to front a band if they wanted to sing rock and roll. If that is not enough, she has been touring for 30 years and has one of the best voices in music! However, I guess she is not as influential to rock and roll as LL Cool J! This is ridiculous!

Chicago, the most successful rock band in U.S. history, the Moody Blues, Rush, I could go on and on. Red Hot Chili Peppers, LL Cool J-give me a damn break. I thought this was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, not the Rap and Crap Hall of Fame!!

I want to know the names of the people from the R&RHOF that
voted and what the criteria is that they follow.
(are there any rules?)
(who picks the R&RHOF voters?)
I can’t find this anywhere!
Can anybody help with this info. ?

I’ll try to find out who votes for the RRHOF. This article says there are 500 voters.

But none of these people have been inducted into the Hall of Fame just yet. They are NOMINEES at this point.

Here’s a website that has the 2007-2009 nominating committee members listed and with bios.

This article, assuming its facts are reliable, really makes the RRHOF look bad. It’s a bit of old news (3/08) but I doubt much has changed.

I think Friedman’s list of wrongly omitted artists seems fair, too:

Neil Sedaka, Linda Ronstadt, Chicago, Carly Simon, Neil Diamond, Laura Nyro, The Moody Blues, Ben E. King, the late Billy Preston, Todd Rundgren, Kiss, Carole King, the late Mary Wells, Chubby Checker, Hall & Oates, Iggy Pop, Patti LaBelle, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Alice Cooper, Sonny & Cher, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Dionne Warwick, Ringo Starr (the only Beatle not in as a solo artist), Lesley Gore, Petula Clark, many famous record producers (Richard Perry, Phil Ramone), DJs (Cousin Brucie, Dan Ingram, Wolfman Jack, et al) who created the genre, or two dozen R&B or early rock doo-wop acts including the magnificent and tragically overlooked Little Anthony and the Imperials.

And this is really funny: Quincy Jones is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Luckily, he doesn’t need them as much as they need him. But that’s the whole story right there, isn’t it?

It seems to be a Music Hall of Fame (Adult Comtemporary HOF?). Again, I love ABBA and think artists like Donna Summer are outstanding but the RNR HOF? Hmmm. I still wonder why Carly Simon isn’t in there, a shame she isn’t. And how can Moody Blues, Chicago, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Pat Benetar, and Rush not be in before some of the ones in there over the years and the current crop? Madonna? LL Cool J. Hmmm. I think with these kinds of oversight, the HOF loses credibility when they induct questionable artists ahead of others.

For at least 10 years, I have questioned what criteria is required for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A few years ago, I finally received a response saying album sales are not the only thing involved. Still, there’s something to be said about 122-million units being sold. This is what is listed for all-time albums sold for Chicago. It is a travesty that this band has not received any credit. They deserve it, just as much as LL Cool J or the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Madonna and so on and so on. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is, simply, a joke.

Thanks Jason. I’ve thought about this a lot the last few months, especially since I visited HOF building itself and had a chance to see who was there and not there.

Knowing what I do know about popular music, the only things I can imagine as criteria for RRHOF induction are: commercial success and influence. Of course, “influence” can have several sub-categories it would seem. It’s hard to quantify but it’s not hard to see. Commercial success is largely a numbers question.

Obviously if commercial success were the primary criteria, the RRHOF would be full of one-hit wonders (there are some 2 and 3 hit wonders in already) and the likes of Shaun Cassidy and the Village People.

Influence clearly the primary criteria or there wouldn’t be rock bands like the Faces waiting for a turn.

Some of the RRHOF’s biggest critics have pointed to issues like “which bands will fill the awards banquet” as criteria for nomination. If that’s even half true — and there’s evidence for that (see Madonna) — the RRHOF is, indeed, a joke.

The museum itself is really cool, whether some of the inductees deserve to be in or not.

Darlene Love sang back up for Dionne Warwick for YEARS in the 70s and Darlene gets nominated but Dionne is still out in the cold ?? What a farce !!

I find it quite hilarious that none of the 1970s-1980s punk band such as Social Distortion, The Vandels, or The Offspring have no even been nominated. they were the ones that revived Punk/started it.

This is not the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it is the Rock and Roll Hall of Lame! Grandmaster Flash? Darlene Love Who? Chantels Who? Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil Who, and the list goes on and on of people who are supposedly “famous.” What a joke!

Let me help you out with some Rock and Roll bands who are actually famous and would be most deserving of being inducted.

Journey – Perhaps you have heard of this band
Styx
Rush
Boston

These four bands alone have accomplished more than many bands in Rock history, and yet they have been overlooked every year for bands such as Grandmaster Flash, Holland, Dozier and Holland, Little Walter, Mo Ostin and The Moonglows!!! Who the hell are these guys??? All of the above four band deserve induction, and I wouldn’t even think of stepping in to the Hall until every one of them has been inducted; at very least, you had the good sense of inducting the following:

The Beatles, and the band’s members individually.
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
The Door
The Hollies
Lynard Skynard
Roy Orbison

and a few others.

It’s not the Rock n Roll Hall of anything if doesn’t have the most influential band of all time… RUSH. They have been playing together for almost 40 years! They are still jamming and will forever! Best Rock band ever, period

What a crock of crapola! LL Cool J? Donna Summer? How is their work even remotely considered Rock??

Here are real rock bands that have had profound influences on the world of music;
1. Rush – forget about the millions of albums and sold out tours they have had over what 30+years, Neal Purtt alone should be their entry ticket, the greatest drummer of all time!!
2. Boston – there isnt a more unique sound in all of Rock and Roll, their sound is timeless and sounds as incredible today as it did in the 70’s!
3. The Cars – how many Rock hits did they have in the 80’s and 90’s???

Lets go people wake the F up already!!
